The supporting lesson plan and activities are designed to explore the importance of balancing online and offline time and activities to maintain wellbeing (hauora).

The lesson plan can be spaced out over several sessions or could be used to create a topic focus for one full day.

By the end of the lesson, ākonga will be able to:

  • Explain how being online can affect you differently.
  • Identify who to go to if you think you’re feeling the signs for a break.
  • Recognise some of the signs that indicate it might be time for an offline break.

The lesson plan includes a variety of activities. some of which are provided as individual resources, providing flexibility for you to 'pick and mix' the resources best suited to your needs. A summary of the individual resources is provided below.

PowerPoint Slides: Felix Feels The Effects (TR_03_2.2)

  • Slides and teacher notes to initiate class discussion, following Felix's decision to stay up late to play online games.

Worksheet: Brains And Bodies (TR_03_2.3)

  • Individually or in pairs ākonga must match the symptoms of too much screen time with the correct parts of the body.

Puzzle: Milly's Mix (TR_03_2.4)

  • Ākonga need to balance Milly's online time and activities to optimise her wellbeing.

Take-It-Home: Help Hector! (TR_03_2.5)

  • Designed to connect the classroom learning with the home environment; this resource can be printed for ākonga to take home and complete with friends and whānau.
