The supporting lesson plan and activities explore the topic of misinformation and fake news, and present strategies for applying critical thinking when going online.
The lesson plan can be spaced out over several sessions or could be used to create a topic focus for one full day.
By the end of the lesson, ākonga will be able to:
- Explain what digital citizenship means.
- Describe why it’s important to be a good digital citizen.
- Identify some of the ways to be a good digital citizen.
The lesson plan includes a variety of activities some of which are provided as individual resources, providing flexibility for you to 'pick and mix' the resources best suited to your needs. A summary of the individual resources is provided below.

Online Game: Quiz (TR_46_7.2)
- Online quiz testing the student's recall and knowledge of key online safety messages from the series. Students can earn 'gold coins' for correct answers that could be traded in for a class reward!
Activity: Design a Digital Citizenship Certificate (TR_46_7.3)
- A template for students to decorate and display to communicate their status as Hector's World Digital Citizens!
Take-It-Home: Create A Character (TR_03_7.4)
- Designed to connect the classroom learning with the home environment; this resource can be printed for ākonga to take home and complete with friends and whānau.
