Estimated Time: 1.75 - 2 hours

The supporting lesson plan and activities explore why our information is valuable online and why it's important to protect it and keep it safe.

The lesson plan can be spaced out over several sessions or could be used to create a topic focus for one full day.

By the end of the lesson, ākonga will be able to:

  • Provide examples of personal and private information.
  • Explain why personal information is valuable online.
  • Describe some ways to protect personal information.

The lesson plan includes a variety of activities. some of which are provided as individual resources, providing flexibility for you to 'pick and mix' the resources best suited to your needs. A summary of the individual resources is provided below.

(Individual resources have a reference code that correlate with the details in the lesson plan.)

Worksheet: Episode Observation (TR_46_3.2)

  • Designed to highlight the key messages about privacy and security from the episode.

Worksheet: Peeling Back The Layers (TR_46_3.3)

  • Designed for ākonga to think about the type of information they share with different people, and how the proximity of relationship can impact the level of trust we have in others.

PowerPoint Slides: Gut Instincts (TR_46_3.4)

  • These slides and accompanying teacher notes can start a conversation about gut instinct and why it can be helpful to 'listen to that feeling in your tummy' when you go online. By reflecting on the emotions that Jazz felt in the episode, the slides introduce the idea that our tummies can sometimes tell us something's amiss before our brains have figured it out.

Take-It-Home: Infographic - Online Privacy At Home (TR_46_3.5)

  • Designed to connect the classroom learning with the home environment; this resource can be printed for ākonga to take home and share with friends and whānau.
