User Agreements

Student user agreements can be an important building block of online safety in schools and kura, and should be used to promote and reinforce responsibilities and expectations through regular student and community communications.

Netsafe has created these templates to provide a starting point, however, we recommend adapting our templates to suit the specific needs of your school and community. Since all schools and kura are unique, there is no “one size fits all” agreement, and any agreement around the responsible and safe use of online spaces and digital devices needs to be carefully unpacked with students. Even better, co-creating agreements with students with clear links to school values often leads to greater buy-in, visibility and clarity around what appropriate and safe use looks like.

Why customise the agreements?

  • Your school’s values will be reflected in the final agreement – making it relatable for your students.
  • If you unpack or co-construct the agreement with your students, it will encourage their personal investment.
  • By creating custom agreements together, you are creating opportunities for discussion and learning about online safety.
